FESTIVAL

Divers_cite Divers/cité (July 26th to August 2nd)

An internationally recognized LGBT festival that celebrates art, music, performance and diversity, Divers/cité is back for it's 17th year. This year there are a heap of free parties, photo exhibits, a movie in the park, cabaret performances and the hipster glam "Sexgarage". My Divers/cité recommendations:

1) Cabaret de Minuit (Thursday, July 30th) - Justin Bond (from Shortbus) belts it out with Our Lady J on piano. Guaranteed debauchery/fun.
2) Mascara (Saturday, August 1st) - The world's biggest drag show, featuring over 100 artists in a whopping five-hour, non-stop theatrical extravaganza. Epic. Hilarious. Catty.

Mountain Excursion

Royal_gorge Royal Gorge Railroad - Daily departures

One of my most memorable trips in Colorado has been the Royal Gorge Railroad. The Royal Gorge is known as the "Grand Canyon of the Arkansas River," as the river cuts through a high plateau of rocks creating a gorge over a thousand feet deep. Passengers on the train can enjoy the breathtaking vistas and watch the adventurous whitewater rafters below. My family chose the wine tasting option-a flight of four wines paired with specialty cheeses and appetizers in a dining or "vista dome" car.

Below are Greg's July picks for London, England

This month's focus is exclusively on the borough of Hackney. Quickly becoming London's trendiest spot, Dalston and the E8 postcode make their grand entrance with the opening of the Dalston Superstore. Close by is the London Fields (E2/E8) area and Stoke Newington (N16). This is surely the nexus of London's alternative gay scene.

Superstore Dalston Superstore

Only open since April, the Dalston Superstore is already becoming one of the edgiest spots in London. The Superstore, as it is affectionately called, isn't officially gay, but the clientele definitely leans that way. Expect a mix of fashion professionals, artists, scenesters, and locals in one of the most Berlinesque venues in London - changing art exhibitions, rough concrete and a DIY approach. Sundays have included drags queens that were a cross between Jack Sparrow and the Golden Girls, armed with huge cans of Aquanet Hairspray in their 'salon'. Music ranges from Dionne Warwick to Giorgio Moroder, with electro and techno in the basement.

Art_fair Art Fair

The Ann Arbor Art fair is July 15-18th in downtown Ann Arbor. Arts and crafts of all types will abound from real life mannequins (near Maynard and William) to wildlife made out of nails (usually S. University near the law quad). It's fun to see crazy amounts of art and even more fun to people watch. If it get's to be too much for you check out a view from high up (the bell tower is open Noon-12:45am weekdays) the top of the Maynard street parking structure is also fun.

Public Life

This miniscule dance space gives a whole new meaning to 'underground.' The entire space is a former public toilet, steps away from Brick Lane and Spitalfields Market. Unlike most clubs, however, Public Life is only open during the day. Saturday is home to Lost Souls (10.30am to 5.00 pm), arguably one of London's finest techno parties. Expect Berlin-influenced DJ's spinning minimal techno to an upbeat polysexual crowd. Who needs to stay out all night when you can dance all day and still be home for dinner?

Best New Restaurant

Murano

Murano_restaurantThis chic new gay-owned restaurant (9010 Melrose Ave. West Hollywood, Ca 90069) has amazing ambience and a delicious French-Italian menu. My favorite is to go there for cocktails at happy hour or dinner. I hear that the brunch is well worth it for their bottomless mimosas. They are even economy-wise with their $12 Tuesday menu featuring savory pizzas, pastas, and pollo piccata. Now we have a sexy new place to drink and dine in L.A. that caters to our taste and lifestyle.

Summer 2009 in Provincetown, MA

Welcome_to_provincetown Located on the outermost tip of Cape Cod and surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on all three sides, Provincetown, Massachusetts (www.provincetowntourismoffice.org) is an incredible tourist destination with a fascinating cultural history and extraordinary entertainment offerings. This season, Provincetown plays host to a myriad of events and activities that celebrate its boundless natural beauty and eclectic arts and culture scene. A brief look at Summer 2009 is below.

Provincetown Celebrates:

Marriage Equality (for summer nuptials and all year long)

Provintown_womenSince the legalization of gay marriage in Massachusetts in 2004, Provincetown has earned the distinction of "the place to get married," issuing more than 2,000 marriage licenses to date. Today, Provincetown may be the easiest place to get married as the Town Clerk recently announced the ability to file applications for marriage licenses on Fridays (previously Town Hall was closed on Fridays, which sometimes added a day to the required three day waiting period). Given Provincetown's beautiful seaside setting, colorful environment and consistent rating as the premier gay destination in America, it makes for an ideal wedding spot.
