Buckie knows the way to San Jose
My name: Buckie
My age: 32
My profession: Human Resources Director
City/town: San Jose, CA
Relationship status: Married
Sexuality: Gay
What was the last vacation you took? Where did you go -- and where do you most want to go?
Last vacation was a surprise Birthday trip to Alaska, somewhere I've always wanted to visit. We stayed in Anchorage for about a week and took all kinds of trips, from planes/trains to automobiles around central Alaska. It was a blast.
Are any famous people from your town?
Believe it or not, there are tons of famous people from San Jose... from ultimate fighters to BIG time CEOs.
What are some of the things you love most about your town?
That even though we are the 10th largest city in the US, it doesn't feel that way, there is still a "small town" feel for the most part. The city itself is pretty diverse and you can get pretty much any kind of food from any kind of culture all within a 10 minute drive.
If someone came to your town for just four hours, what is the one thing he should do?
Visit Santana Row for some lunch and hit some some shopping there, head on over to the Winchester Mystery House (pretty freaky) then head downtown to the Tech Museum of Innovation to check out what Silicon Valley is all about.
What are some great restaurants for a night out with gay friends?
There are tons of great restaurants here. But for a specific "gay" night out, I would say Seven Restaurant Lounge is pretty fun.
What are some great restaurants for a romantic gay date? What about these restaurants appeals to you?
Romantic, huh? Well, I would say downtown The Melting Pot is pretty fun for a romantic date. Nothing says "i like you" more than sharing a nice chocolate fondue!
What are your favorite gay bars and/or dance clubs?
When I like to relax and play some pool or darts, I head over to Renegades. If I am in the mood to dance, I head on over to Hunters.
What are your favorite gay parties or events in your town, if any? What is the crowd or scene like at those places?
Pride would be the biggest gay event. It's usually pretty diverse.
Where is the best public place for a gay person to make out there (or isn't there one)?
The rose garden would be pretty safe.
What is the gay community like there? Do you consider yourself to be part of any particular "scene?"
The gay community here is still in the development stages. The Alameda would be where a concentration of gay people actually hang out. I don't consider myself part of any particular "scene".
Where do you shop for clothes?
I'm usually a jeans, tshirt and baseball cap kinda guy... though if I feel like dressing up, I'll head over to Burberry.
If you had gay friends visiting from out of town for the first time, what are some "must-dos" you'd recommend?
I'd steer them to head up to San Francisco, since it's still pretty close.
Where do the hot boys in your town tend to hang out?
They seem to usually be pretty hidden, though I have seen my share at the gym.
If you had to describe the "average gay boy" style of your town in two words, what would they be?
Flamey Asian.
Do gay men and lesbians hang out together in your town or is that just unheard of? gay men and lesbians together?
Not usually, though the Billy De Frank Center usually brings Gay people together for different event.
Do you have a hometown crush?
Just my husband!

Let me tell ya something, I lived in San Jose for 8 years and IT SUCKS!!! There's no there there. No nightlife (Renegades is a dive), no shopping (Santana Row: another generic mall disguised as Main St.), no culture, unless you count a million movie theaters all showing the same movies as culture. They roll the sidewalks up at 7 PM. Gay men in San Jose are either coupled or spend all their time driving to San Francisco. San Jose will always be nothing more than San Francisco's red-headed step-sister. Once a cow town, always a cow town.

My b/f's college friend lives in the San Jose area and is involved with their Pride committee. We've been up there a few times now - and I agree with some of the people who've posted - San Jose isn't LA, SF or NY. On the other hand, all our socializing involved our friends' local "circle" rather than the local clubs. And yes, SF is close-enough to drive up for dinner or a night out.
The high-tech industry of the area attracts better-educated and more open-minded people than some other parts of America.
Incidentally, I see "Buckie" wearing a CalPoly SLO shirt. I have a cousin in SLO. My own experience is that SLO is a surprisingly small town!

The question:
If you had to describe the "average gay boy" style of your town in two words, what would they be?
The answer?
Flamey Asian.
I do not know about this. I think Buck lacked other things to say and these words blurted out. I see it negatively for SJ. AVERAGE GAY BOY (style) is a flamey asian? worst thing to describe San Jose boys.

I LOVE San Jose. It's not for everyone. There are those queeny dramatic ego-driven people like the guy who made the comment about it being a "cow town" that wont fit in. It's far from being a cow town. It is the 10th largest city in the nation. It's the capitol of Silicon Valley, so it is A LOT of technology. Not a place to go for gay excitement. Santa Cruz and SF are close by, the weather is always great and the multicultural society is amazing. Experience it for yourself before you take the word of some ill-educated dumb ass.

I remembered seeing "Cow Palace" from the train up in that area. Forget where it was exactly. San Jose?
